Vitamin Sea Therapy

“The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears or the sea.” ~ Isak Dinesen

This is my favorite quote. Ever.

I first read it in a Jimmy Buffet autobiography, when he paraphrased it. Then I searched out the original quote. And I’ve been in love with it ever since. I even had it engraved on my wedding ring, right next to the coordinates for the beach where I met Island Boy (now Island Husband).

It is no lie that September has been a month filled with emotional upheaval for many a rock dweller. (Physical upheaval, too, depending on which rock you call home.) And the dramatic seems to accentuate what, under ordinary circumstances, would be mundane inconveniences. Makes it all a little more intense. Amplifies it.

And I’m tired. Physically, mentally, emotionally. Just drained. I’ll be glad when September is over (milestone birthday and amazing party the one exception to an otherwise tough month).

Which is why, when I saw a girl floating on a particularly pristine patch of turquoise water the other day, I had to pull my truck over, grab my phone and rush to the sea’s edge. Because this image reminds me, in almost unbelievable shades of blue, of the immense power the sea has to heal.

And I wanted to savor the moment. Save it for future reference.

Because sometimes you just can’t jump in and float your cares away. Whether due to logistics, responsibilities or something else. But you can always remind yourself how good it feels. Then hold on to that feeling until you can let the sea wrap you in her warm embrace again.
